Dog food

Here's something we never saw before coming to New Zealand: rolls of dog food, kept in the chiller section in the supermarket. I have no idea if this is a good thing or not, but it seems really common.

p.s. i'm loving your blog entries (long time reader, first time commenter), particularly those where you point out cultural eccentricities :)

Yuck! Looks even less appetising than ever- can you imagine putting ten of THOSE in your fridge??? Yum, the smell would be sooo good...

Hello Laura, welcome on board! And hi again Suzy too :)

In Ireland, dog and cat food usually comes in tins, or if it's in dried form then it comes in paper bag type packets or in cardboard boxes (like cereal). I'm not sure why something so common here is new to us, or what it says about our differing cultures :)

We have tins too. But usually for cats. I'm sure you can get canned dog food, or at least you could when I was younger. Maybe because dogs eat so much more than cats it was easier to make giant luncheon-sized rolls instead of making enormous tins. Or perhaps the rolls contain a fresher kind of meat and don't have the preservatives of the tinned variety. I'm sure there's a whole science involved here!!
